Danny Ray started his 2014 road season in style with a convincing win in the opening Saumarez Park 5k race of the year in 17 minutes 3 seconds, fellow junior Ed Mason also ran a positive race and chased Ray over the opening two laps before eventually being passed by Tristan Robilliard in the last half of the race.
Louise Perrio was leading woman stopping the clock in 17 minutes 46 seconds for 5th overall. Mel Nicolle was second and Chantal Green third. With a grading of 81% Perrio’s run was the leading age graded performance.
Whilst the sheltered park circuit provided some protection from the winds the wet underfoot sections on some of the cinder tracks slowed times and when coupled with a sharp chicane around the recent excavations many felt that the course was running 20-30 seconds slower than normal for the 5k distance.
