KPMG Easter 10km

Merrien wins opening KPMG Easter runs event at a canter

Lee Merrien ran out an easy winner of the opening race of the KPMG Easter Runs weekend.   The 10km road race saw a Guernsey 1-2 as Merrien ran with Mike Wilesmith for the opening 3km before breaking clear just before the half way mark.

The field of nearly 200  seemed undeterred by the strong winds & rain but the head wind in the second half of the race slowed times.

Merrien had said he aimed to race at what for him was a brisk tempo pace and he maintained his opening pace of 3:10 per km into the headwind in the closing stages to finish over a minute and a half clear of Wilesmith in 31 minutes 37 seconds. Wilesmith, who recently clocked 31:55 in the Trafford 10k was a little off his best in 33 min 13 seconds. Charnwood’s Martin Lewis was third a further 50 seconds in arrears.

Preston’s two times Olympian Helen Clitheroe was 8th overall in 35 minutes 19 seconds and was comfortably clear of Louise Perrio who was 15th overall in 37 min 7 seconds . Becky Le Maitre ran a great race to post an island games ‘B’ standard and place third woman overall stopping the clock in 38 minutes 53 seconds.

Over 73 juniors & children raced the colts cross country events – results below.
