Today we are naming a 35-strong team for the Island Games next month. There is a great blend of youth and experience in the team which should ensure a great Games for all team members. There are 14 debutants in all across the squad including several teenagers. Conversely, we have very strong experience in the team and medal chances aplenty!
The men’s sprints are headed up by our new GB Junior athlete Cameron Chalmers. Cameron has openly said that having smashed the Island junior record at Footes Lane recently – he is aiming at the gold medal in Jersey. Josh Allaway goes to his third Games looking to step up onto the medal rostrum following solid showings in the past and progress last season. The other Chalmers sibling – Ala – is also included in the 100m alongside Josh. Former English Schools Champion and reigning Island Games Champ Sam Wallbridge is our only male hurdler.
On the track there is solidity across the board. Mike Batiste opened his season with a 1:57 clocking over 800m and at the opposite end of the spectrum, Mike Wilesmith has been in great early form on the road this year in preparation for his 10k-“half” double. He will of course join gold medal shout Lee Merrien in the latter.
James Bougourd is the surprise of the summer with his immediate impact in the javelin. The former footballer looks to have bags of potential. On the comeback trail is Jonathan Guille who will contest both horizontal jumps.
Both relay squads will be harbouring medal hopes, and will be looking to get the baton around without disaster striking as it did in both races two years ago!
Kylie Robilliard is excited to be back in the Island Games after a four year wait, and is sure to be aiming for a 100-100hurdles double win. Indi Gallagher has crept up on the rails quietly in the last few months to book her spot in the 400m for what promises to be an exciting week for her.
Almost an embarrassment of riches from 800 through to “half” for us – from Nat to Sarah to Louise we seem to have all bases covered. It will also be interesting for the newbies to be alongside the three experienced athletes and hopefully push on have an impact on the field – not to mention the ever-green Nikki Neal still going great guns!
Good strength in depth in the javelin isn’t something the club is known for but to be able to have Zoe and Ali lining up in Jersey is great for us. Young jumpers Becca Toll and Sarah Waters will also be happy with their progress to book their slots.
The women’s sprint relay is all about youth. The four girls have been selected not only on ability but on attitude and focus as well. They are sure to be in and around our future relay teams for many years. Our 4×400 girls could spring a surprise if they can run close to that four minute barrier – which on individual times looks possible (even if two of them have just run an 800m that morning!).
