Lee Merrien made light work of the strong Northerly winds but there was a tremendous race behind him as Matt Loveridge shrugged off the effects of a fall to finish strongly and claim second just ahead of Mike Wilesmith. Whilst Merrien ran a solo race for victory in 21 minutes 39 seconds the chasing group watched each other closely and it was the island games middle distance athlete Loveridge who used his finishing speed to claim second in 22 minutes 29seconds.
The two lap/4 mile event produced a tight race amongst the top six places and the podium spots were followed across the line by Dave Emery, Mike Batiste and Dan Galpin.
Despite the absence of Ulrike Maisch there was a strong line-up in the women’s 4 mile event but Sarah Mercier soon dispelled any doubts there may have been in her racing fitness and established herself in the top 8 overall in the opening lap, some way clear of Nat Whitty, Louise Perrio and Laura McCarthy. Mercier kept the pressure on to run a superb 23 minute 51 second clocking, outside Louise Perrio’s course record but a superb run in the conditions. The positions amongst the chasers remained the same on the second lap with Whitty crossing the line in 25 minutes 36 seconds and Perrio 25 minutes 59 sec, just 7 seconds clear of McCarthy.
Sam Culverwell was the impressive winner of the 2 mile junior event. Culverwell had clung on to the main senior group before he peeled off to win the one lap event in an impressive 11 minutes 25 seconds. Hugo Bisson was second and Mikey Ingrouille third. There was a tremendous race for leading girl as Eliza Mason showed a good turn of speed to hold off Amy Dallamore in a close sprint for the line.
