Reigning FNB XC champion Mike Wilesmith strengthened his title defence by taking control of the Delancey event just after halfway and holding off Richard Friedrich with a long run for the line.

Wilesmith and Friedrich had been part of a 6 strong group in the opening stages of the 6 lap 6 mile race but as the tight and hilly Delancey course dealt out its attrition the group slimmed down lap by lap and though ex Munich marathon winner Friedrich was never far off the heels of his fellow marathon specialist it was the high cadence style of Wilesmith that drew clear over the final two laps to cross the line with a 7 second margin in 32 minutes.

Behind the duo, GB’s top ranked 16 year old steeplechaser Ed Mason got his disrupted winter season into gear to overtake fellow middle distance specialist Mike Batiste in the closing stages and claim a good third in 32 minutes 23 seconds. In a high quality event Tristan Robilliard ran one of his best ever races for 5th, just clear of improving 17 year old Dan Galpin.

Whilst the men’s race proved a cagey game Sarah Mercier took the 4 mile women’s event by the scruff of the neck with a determined start that soon saw her draw well clear of her main challengers Ulrike Maisch and Louise Perrio.  “with the leading men running 6 miles I hoped I could latch onto them…but they ran away from me” said the Island Games 5000m star with a wry smile.   Mercier duly finished 200 metres clear of the mixed field 4 mile event in 22 minutes 35 seconds with 16 year olds Alex Rowe and Sammy Galpin in second and third. Maisch was next woman home in 23 minutes 32 seconds. A further 200 Metres back Louise Perrio held off Laura McCarthy for third

14 year old Mikey Ingrouille was the winner of the 3 mile event from Anton Goovaerts but but just behind them Fran Bown and Renee Hubert strengthened their challenges for the FNB division 4 title.

Lorcan Gallagher drew 30 seconds clear of Jack Reed to win the 2 mile event in 12 min 33 seconds, Eliza Mason was the leading girl.
