Lee Merrien put aside the tiredness of an exhausting marathon schedule to chalk up a comfortable victory in the Chertsey House 10 mile road race and with it broke his own 6 year old course record, albeit by a single second.

The Rio Olympic selection hopeful broke clear from the Imperial start line and after negotiating the opening mile long climb up past Torteval church put in a series up sub 5 minute miles past the Mallard(3 miles), Longfrie(5m) and up the Felconte towards Perelle(7m) to return via L’Eree and on to the Imperial finish line in 50 minutes 40 seconds.

Matt Loveridge also started strongly but an unfortunate diversion off course just after 6 miles  handed runners up spot to Tristan Robilliard who finished in 57 minutes 48 seconds.  Luke Richards was Third.

Whilst Loveridge’s race was over at 6 miles Sarah Mercier’s was just getting into gear as the Island Games12698349_10153363549898015_6009120491021230963_o 5000m Champion accelerated away from a group that included fellow Hampshire Cross Country medallist Ulrike Maisch. Mercier kept the pressure on to the finish and crossed the line 6th overall in 61mins 40 seconds with Maisch  2 1/2 minutes behind in 8th. In her first serious outing over the distance Jenny James impressed again as she broke 68 minutes to place third woman.

70 runners took to the start line – Merrien’s absolute performance put him clear in the age graded results also but Sean Galpin kept up his strong series with another top placing.
