Ed Mason and Louise Perrio took home the  honours in the first event of the revised Guernsey Easter Festival.

2016’s KPMG Easter Runs kicked off with a fast and flat premiere of the newly introduced 5-kilometre loop based around Footes Lane. The finish area consisted of a 300m loop round the athletics track. On the day, pleasant conditions gave hopes of fast times and indeed, many runners made impressive performances.

Junior Mason was clear from the start, and entered the finishing lap with a 150m lead to finish in 16:06. Guernsey runners Carl Holden and Tristan Robilliard were neck-and-neck for second place, with Holden using the track’s back straight to stretch his legs to a 3-second lead. Jersey triathlete Dave Holmes was first visitor across the line while Torbay AC’s David Tomlin was the first veteran finisher.

The winner said of his race: ‘it was a good run, I didn’t feel great but it was good to win it, especially being the youngest winner of an Easter Run’. True to his word, the 17-year old National steeplechase champion’s victory made him the youngest winner in the Festival’s 35 year history. The reduced race distances may have played a role in enticing more of the island’s top junior athletes to compete.

Louise Perrio started fairly steadily and latched onto a group of runners early on, moving up to finish in 17:52 and claim woman’s gold. Guernsey’s Laura McCarthy and Poole’s Helen Dyke took 2nd and 3rd spots respectively. McCarthy removing exactly a minute from her previous best for her 18 min 23 sec finish.

The revised event saw popularity amongst both locals and visitors. Lead woman Louise Perrio was ‘grateful for the civil protection and police’ in their role in ensuring that the race ran smoothly. Veteran Chris O’Neill claimed that the ‘weather was perfect and could not have been better’, which seemed to play a part in the glut of personal bests at the event.

There were over 180 finishers in the adult race and a further 100+ in the childrens events.
