Off the back of quality performances both indoors and over the country Sarah Mercier will hope to carry her good form to the roads as part of a large Guernsey Athletics FNB Endurance squad travelling to compete in the Hendy-Ford Eastleigh 10k this weekend. She will be part of a full strength women’s team that includes Louise Perrio, improving island games hopeful Jenny James as well as Laura McCarthy, Vanessa Rodrigues and Laura Quayle. It will be Mercier’s first major off-island road race and with the flat and fast Eastleigh course normally producing quick times she will be hoping for a fast run, possibly challenging Perrio’s ouright Guernsey women’s 10k record of 35:09 set on the Eastleigh course in 2012.
David Emery, 6th in the Jersey 2015 island games 10,000m and winner of the recent Chertsey House Imperial 10 mile, will lead the men and will hope to be within the island games ‘A’ qualifying standard of 33:10. Emery’s current best of 33:08 was set in the lead-in to the Jersey games.
Also included in the named men’s squads are several younger athletes in the form of Dan Galpin, Ed Mason, Richard Bartram, Jamie Ingrouille and Chris Way but illness and injury may rule out Galpin and Mason.
The event is one of the first to be undertaken with the wider support of FNB who have recently extended their support of Guernsey Athletics to include that of leading Endurance squads competing off island.
Carl Holden will be another squad athlete travelling off island this weekend in search of a fast time in the Reading Half Marathon.
