There was a good effort from the Guernsey junior schools interinsular side made up from Guernsey athletic members against a really strong Jersey team over the weekend. The race was held at Home Farm, Saumarez Park in difficult conditions where the 10-12 years olds ran over 1500m and 2000m courses into an energy sapping wind. Jersey selects their side from across the whole island whereas we select club athletes so we are often against bigger and stronger youngsters. That was the case this time as Jersey won by 60-91 points.

Guernsey’s standout performance was year 6 athlete Jack Riley who held off a strong Jersey athlete Casper Winterflood to sprint home to victory. Year 6 girl, Tilly Beddow, also had a close race against Elizabeth Atkinson and finished a strong second. Some other special mentions are Aimee Lilley and Talia Godet in the year 5 race – had we run 2000m they’d have caught the Jersey girls. The year 5 trio of Rupert Wilson, Jayden Creber and Charlie Hynes (Charlie is still in year 4) were especially impressive and showed great potential.
Guernsey athletic members were out in force supporting, organising and marshalling the event. In particular Nick and Tracey Marley, Ingy, Lynn Williams, Matt Loveridge, JP Bisson and a special mention to our junior athletes who marshalled the race through the wooded area and we didn’t lose a single athlete!
