Whilst two of Guernsey’s own elite endurance athletes and previous festival competitors, Lee Merrien and Sarah Mercier, are deep in Commonwealth preparations of their own for the Gold Coast Games, former English Commonwealth Games athlete Zara Hyde-Peters OBE has confirmed that she will again return once again to compete in the Intertrust Easter Festival, along with husband Mike who always finishes amongst the leading veterans. Zara’s England selection came in 1994 soon after her first visit to the Guernsey festival. As she explains, her love for the event and island itself has seen her a regular visitor to these shores over a 25 year period: “We have been competing in Guernsey Easter runs since 1992. What brings us back? Competitive racing – the challenge, friendly welcome from host club and the camaraderie built over 4 days of racing. Oh – and it’s a beautiful island that we enjoy visiting.”
In addition to her continued athletic exploits, Zara has been involved in sports administration since 1999 as Technical Director for the athletics World Class Endurance programme and latterly as CEO of The British Triathlon Federation from 2008-2014.
