Guernsey Athletics is pleased to announce that multiple Island Games champion Lee Merrien will undertake the role of “Endurance Manager” for July’s Island Games in Gibraltar.
The all-time local great will be the third member of team management alongside Team Manager Tom Druce and Assistant Team Manager Nick Marley, both of whom have fulfilled their roles for the past two editions of the Games.
Merrien’s position has been created in order to offer the best possible support to athletes on the team in endurance events – events which in recent Games have provided a large percentage of Guernsey’s medals.
The athletics team will also benefit from the therapist experience of Dale Garland as he will take the role of “Athletics Sports Therapist.” Garland’s long and successful athletics career has seamlessly transitioned into sports therapy – meaning that the athletes will be able to count on his specific sports knowledge with regards to managing injuries and recovering between events.
Garland will be travelling in a dual role as he hopes to be selected in the long jump and relays.
The team will be selected on Sunday following the “deadline day” edition of the Intertrust T&F Challenge incorporating Island Games Trials. The team will be released late on bank holiday Monday.
