Sam Lesley sped home at the front of a record field in the opening 5 mile race of the 2020 Chertsey House Road Race series. Whilst Mel Nicolle surprised herself with a personal best run to finish top woman.
On a windy day not conducive to fast times the race was initially led from the L’Ancresse start line by Will Bodkin but Lesley emerged at Bordeaux, a mile and a half later, with a small lead over last year’s winner Carl Holden and Nick Mann.
Despite a lone battle into the Force 5 headwinds over much of the latter part of the race the slightly built middle distance specialist extended his lead to nearly 200m come the North Beach finish line which he crossed in 28 minutes 17 seconds.

After an illness-disrupted period of training Mel Nicolle made light work of the difficult conditions to edge her personal best time down to 33 minutes 24 seconds and placed 26th of the 137 finishers. Also performing well were Rosie Williams (33rd, 34:12), Nix Petit (40th, 35:08) and Laura Quayle(41st, 35:10) who all ran significant personal bests.
Sean Galpin (V55) topped the age graded standings with a 79.16% score ahead of V50 Simon Ingrouille(78.17%) with V35 Nick Mann (75.36%) in third. Mel Nicolle V35W moved to 7th place in age /gender terms with a 72.70% grade.
The next race in the Chertsey Series is the Pembroke-Town 10k on Sunday February 16th.
