26th March 2020
Yesterday, the States of Guernsey Public Health Department advised the Department of Education, Sport and Culture to close Footes Lane athletics track in order to comply with its Government guidelines.
In the States of Guernsey’s media release on 24th March 2020 – Strict new rules on staying at home and away from others… – it was clearly advised that non-essential public spaces including outdoor leisure facilities and sports courts would be closed with immediate effect.
Guernsey Athletics applauds the Public Health Department for their recognition of the importance of exercise and sport, even at this unique and difficult time – and endorses the approach of INDIVIDUAL training (or training with a fellow household member) continuing away from Footes Lane. Naturally, as is true of all other disruption to normality, it is hoped that the track will be reopened soon.
Competitive senior or upper-teenage athletes should contact their coach or Athletics Development Officer Tom Druce to seek structured training advice. Younger athletes are encouraged to simply stay active in line with Government advice.
