Sarah Mercier and Louise Perrio are Guernsey’s leading representatives in a strong Hampshire women’s squad that heads to Loughborough’s Prestwold Hall for next Saturday’s British Inter-County Cross Country Championships. The Sarnian duo join national top ten placers Louise Small and Lauren Hall in a nine-strong Hampshire squad. Team chances have been dented though by the withdrawal of 2013 race winner Louise Damen and Rio Olympic 10,000m athlete Jess Martin(formerly Andrews).
Mercier was held off a podium place in the 2017 county championships but the quality of her run was put into perspective by last week’s English National XC result. Though absent herself the three ladies who placed ahead of her 6 weeks earlier all gained top ten placings. Small finished 2nd, Damen 6th and Lauren Hall, who only narrowly edged Mercier in January’s Botley run-in, was 7th.
Mainland based Danny Ray lines up in the under 20 race but Dan Galpin and Ed Mason had to decline selection for travel and injury reasons.
As Hampshire under 13 girl champion, Summer Woodhead, will lead out the Hampshire pen in the youngest age category of the day. It will be the young St. Sampsons student’s biggest race to date and gives her the opportunity of selection to the Virgin London mini-marathon.
Louis Le Cheminant will line up in the under 15 race and Sammy Galpin in the under 17’s.
